What do I need to pack for my charter yacht vacation?

It can be extremely difficult to decide what you need to take on any holiday, let alone a yacht! After all, the weather can change in an instant, and you might not know what you’re going to be doing every day. Read on to find out more about what you might need to bring on a charter yacht vacation and the questions that you should ask in order to make sure you’ve got all that you need to be packed up and ready to go.

Questions you need to ask

Before you get going, there are just a few things you’ll need to know about the holiday you’re going on. Without knowing all the facts, you can find yourself with the wrong clothing and equipment, meaning that it’s always a good idea to find out as much as you can beforehand. This includes:

What is the weather looking like?

You’ve got your t-shirts and shorts ready, you’re relaxing on the deck of the yacht, and then it starts to rain. Packing the wrong clothes is a tale as old as time, so by triple checking the weather forecast, you can ensure that you’re not dealing with a storm in your Speedos or wrapped up warm only to have the sun beating down on you for the next few days.

What are you thinking of getting up to?

The activities that you do on your vacation can have a huge impact on the right things to pack. For example, if you’re considering snorkelling, diving, swimming or scuba diving, you’ll need many spare clothes. Meanwhile, someone that’s just considering a long weekend of sunbathing and relaxing on the boat will need their bathing suits and something to throw on over the top.

Where are you going?

This doesn’t just relate to where you’re going geographically but is more about the places you’re likely to find yourself. For example, a trip to an incredibly upmarket restaurant might be on the cards as a treat one night, and this would require different attire compared to if you were having a picnic on board with the rest of your family. Striking the perfect balance between practicality and style is key, so knowing what you need and where you need it should be at the core of your packing.

What to pack

Clothes

One of the obvious things that you need to pack is your clothes. If you’re planning to dock and head to a restaurant one night, a nice dress or suit would be ideal, but if you’re taking a much more practical and laid back approach to yachting, shorts and waterproof jackets will be fine. If your luggage allowance will allow it, there’s nothing wrong with bringing a bit of everything. As a rough guide, you’ll want to bring:

  • A light jacket or jumper
  • A raincoat
  • Summer clothes like dresses, skirts, t-shirts and shorts
  • Swimwear
    • Some formal attire
  • Hats or scarves to tie around your head

Books

You might not have expected to see this entry, but books can be a lifesaver on a yacht vacation. A lot of the day will be spent back relaxing on the boat, waiting to arrive at your next destination as the idyllic scenery rolls by. If you’re not into sunbathing all day, it can be the perfect time to spend reading a book and expanding your literary mind. As a top tip, bringing an eReader can take up significantly less space, all whilst containing potentially hundreds of books for you to trawl through.

Toiletries

Toiletries are some of the most important things you bring on holiday but are annoyingly the easiest to forget. Whether it’s something as simple as toothpaste or an essential such as a medical kit, put it all in one bag so you know where everything is. Remember to bring suncream or sunblock too as the sun can be amplified by the waves and lead to more severe burns than on land. Other toiletries to pack include:

  • Makeup, including bronzer and waterproof mascara
  • An SPF lip balm
  • Deodorant
  • Wipes
  • A wet brush (ideal for untangling knotted hair)
  • Razors/shavers
